Clock General Troubleshooting

DIAGNOSIS

The clock is serviced as a final assembly. An inoperable clock should be removed and returned to a service center to be serviced. The clock will be replaced with a functioning clock.

The diagnostic procedures are intended to isolate a non-functional clock from a fault in the vehicle wiring harness. The electronic clock has a self test mode which can be entered by following the procedure in Subroutine B. If the clock can be set and passes the self test, causes for malfunction outside of the clock should be investigated before the clock is replaced.

L/S = Left/Set (top left button)
R/S = Right/Set (top right button)

 Electronic Digital Clock
1. Clock Function

Turn Ignition to On or Acc.

Shows DATE for 5 seconds? Reverts to time? >>> GO to 2
Does not turn on? >>> Go to A1, in Subroutine A.
Display on, but not in date or time mode? >>> GO to B1, in Subroutine B

2 - Dimming Function

Turn headlamps on.

Dims? >>> GO to 3
Does not dim? >>> GO to A4, in Subroutine A.

3 - Set Time -- Hours

Ignition On -- Headlamps Off.
Depress TIME and L/S. Hold down.

Hours advance and rollover? Minutes replaced by A or P? (Ex. 10:A) >>> GO to 4
Does not advance left display ?>>> GO to B1, in Subroutine B.

4 - Set Time -- Minutes

Depress TIME and R/S. Hold Down.

Minutes advance and rollover? >>> GO to 5.
Right display does not advance? >>> GO to B1, in Subroutine B.

5 - Set Date -- Month

Depress DATE and L/S. Hold Down.

Months advance and rollover? >>> GO to 6.
Left display does not advance? >>> GO to B1, in Subroutine B.

6 - Set Date -- Day

Depress DATE and R/S. Hold Down.

Days advance and rollover? >>> GO to 7.
Days do not advance? >>> GO to B1, in Subroutine B.

7 - Using Elapsed Time

Depress E-Time button. Release, then depress L/S button. Release.

Clears to zero? Starts counting with colon blinking on and off? >>> GO to 8.
Does not start? >>> GO to B1, in Subroutine B.

8 - Stopping and Restarting Elapsed Time

Depress R/S button. Release.

Stops counting? Flashes? >>> Clock OK. Do not remove.
Does not stop? >>> GO to B1, in Subroutine B.
Wiring Harness Check -- Subroutine A

A1 - Power to Clock -- Check Fuse

Open Vehicle Door.

Dome lamp light? >> GO to A2
Dome lamp does not turn On? >> CHECK fuse. VERIFY dome light works. GO to 1, in Function Test.

A2 - Power to Clock Harness

Put Test lamp between Circuit 57 (Black) and 54 (Light Green/Yellow Stripe) on back of clock connector.

Test lamp lights? >>> Damaged Clock. REPLACE and VERIFY clock operation. GO to 1, in Function Test.
Test lamp does not turn On? >>> GO to A3.

A3 - Power to Ground Circuit Check

Put test lamp between vehicle ground and Circuit 54.

Test lamp lights? >>> Trouble in Circuit 57 . FIX and VERIFY clock operation. GO to 1, in Function Test.

A4 - Headlamp witch to Clock Harness

Put test lamp between Circuit 57 and Circuit 14 (Brown) on the back of the clock connector, then turn headlamps on.

Test lamp lights? >>> Damaged clock. REPLACE and VERIFY clock operation, GO to 1, in Function test.
Test lamp does not turn on? >> Trouble in Circuit 14. FIX and VERIFY clock operation. GO to 1, in Function test.
Clock Self Test Mode -- Subroutine B

B1 - Getting Into Self Test Mode

Ignition switch Off -- Headlamps Off.
Depress Date, E-Time, and L/S. Hold Down.
Release and within 5 seconds turn ignition switch On.

All digits show zero with colon on? Starts counting on all digits? >>> Go to B2
NOTE: Second digit from right will only count to "5" on some designs and to "9" on others.
Does not start self test? >>> Possible damaged clock. START test B1 again. If clock fails, REPLACE clock and GO to 1, in Function Test.

B2 - R/S Button Check

Depress R/S.

Right most digit blanks? >>> GO to B3.
Right most digit does not blank? >>> Damaged clock. REPLACE and VERIFY.

B3 - L/S Button Check

Depress L/S.

Center right blanks? >>> GO to B4.
Center right digit does not blank? >>> Damaged clock. REPLACE and VERIFY.

B4 - Elapsed Time Button Check

Depress E-Time.

Center left digit blanks? >>> GO to B5.
Center left digit does not blank? >>> Damaged clock. REPLACE and VERIFY.

B5 - Date Button Check

Depress DATE.

Left most digit blanks? >>> GO to B6.
Left most digit does not blank? >>> Damaged clock. REPLACE and VERIFY.

B6 - Time Button Check

Depress TIME.

Starts operation at 10:00 P.M. in Jan 1?? >>> Clock self check passed. ATTEMPT clock operation before removing clock..
Does not blank colon or restart operation? >>> Damaged clock. REPLACE and VERIFY.
